acrylic paint, 2024

Studios: 2024, Adelaide Contemporary Experimental, SA

This body of work focuses on uncovering paint’s inherent qualities and ability to stand on its own. While it’s not new for a painting to be unframed or off the canvas, widely held expectations of what it should be remain deeply ingrained in how it is perceived. Smoker’s approach strips away these expectations, revealing the pure essence of paint itself: its physicality, textures and layers that extend beyond the surface of the canvas or any traditional support. Whether the resulting creations are objects, sculptures, things or paintings is left open, but the paint emerges as elusive, responsive, unpredictable and limitless.
